At approximately 8:30 PM on Saturday, October 24 a Reserve Deputy with the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office was struck by a vehicle near the intersection of White Bear Avenue and Frost Avenue in Maplewood. He was transported to Regions Hospital with multiple critical injuries.
Reserve Deputy Michael Wilken, 56 of Newport died at the hospital early Sunday morning from complications related to injuries suffered in that accident.
Wilken has been a Reserve Deputy with the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office for 10 years. He has volunteered with the department on hundreds of events including parades, community festivals, parks and water patrol. He was volunteering at the Fright Farm Haunted House operated by the Sheriff’s Office when the incident occurred.
“Mike was an outstanding volunteer who loved serving others and gave his own time to help with numerous events in the community. His commitment is to be greatly admired” stated Sgt. Eric Bradt, Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office.
Reserve Deputy Michael Wilken will be laid to rest in a “line of duty” funeral to be held on Friday, October 30, 2009. The funeral will take place at 11:00 AM at St. Andrews Lutheran Church,900 Stillwater Road, Mahtomedi, MN 55115, with a law enforcement procession to follow to the cemetery (location yet to be announced). A visitation will be held on Thursday, October 29th from 4:00-8:00 PM at Bradshaw Funeral Home, 4600 Greenhaven Drive, White Bear Township, MN 55127.
Wilken is survived by his wife Donna and two grown children.
He will be greatly missed.
